Dennis Rodman is an American retired professional basketball player, who played for the Detroit Pistons, San Antonio Spurs, Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles, and Dallas Mavericks in the National Basketball Association. Rodman was born on May 13, 1961, in New Jersey, United States.

Dennis Rodman Early life

Roadman’s birth took place in New Jersey, United States. He is the son Shirley and Philander Rodman; an Air Force enlisted member, who later fought in the Vietnam War. When Dennis was very young, at that time his dad left his family, eventually setting in the Philippines. Rodman has many brothers and siblings, according to his father, he has either 26 or 28 siblings on his father’s side. However, Rodman himself has told that he is the eldest of the total 47 children of his sons.

After the departure of his father, Dennis did many odd jobs to provide assistance to his family, up to 4 jobs at the time. In his 1997 biography “bad as I wanna be” he told me about his emotions for his dad “ I have not seen my father in more than 30 years, so what is there to miss, I look at it like this, some men brought me into this world. That does not mean I have a father”.

Rodman and his two sisters, Debra and Kim, were raised in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas, at the time one of the most improvised areas of the city. Rodman was very close to her mom, and he denied to move when she sent him to a nursery, at that time he was four years old. For her mother, her two sisters were very important, who good at basketball due to their talent. He generally felt “overwhelmed” by the all-female household.

Rodman while attending South Oak Cliff High School, was a gym class student of future Texas A&M basketball coach Gary Blair. Blair gave coaching to his sisters, Debra and Kim made them able to win three state championships. He has earned his place in the high school basketball teams but later cut from the squads. After completing school, Rodman worked as an overnight janitor at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. He then also felt the experience of a sudden growth spurt and decided to try basketball again.

A family friend tipped off the head coach of Cooke County College in Texas. In his single semester there, he averaged 17.6 points and 13.3 rebounds, before flunking out due to poor academic performance. After his short stint in Gainesville, he shifted to Southeastern Oklahoma State University, an NAIA school. Rodman was a three-time NAIA All-American and led the NAIA in rebounding in both the 1984-1985 and 1985-1986 seasons.

During the time of college, Rodman worked at the summer youth basketball camp, where he became friends with Bryne Rich who was shy and withdrawn due to the hunting accident in which he mistakenly shot and killed his best friend. The two formed a close bond.

Rodman made himself able for the 1986 NBA draft. He was drafted by the Detroit Pistons as the 3rd pick in the 2nd round, by joining a rugged team of coach Chuck Daly that was known “bad boys” for their harsh approach to basketball. Rodman performed well and proved himself.

In the 1987-1988 season, Rodman improved his status, averaging 11.6 and 8.7 rebounds and starting in 32 of 82 regular-season games. He remained a bench player during the 1988-1989 season, averaging 9 points and 9.4 rebounds in 27 minutes, by providing such effective defense, he voted for All-Defensive Team, the first of 8 times in his career.

Rodman faced a tough loss when coach Chuck Daly, whom he has admired as a surrogate father, gave resignation in May, Rodman skipped the preseason camp and fined $68,000.


In 1994, Rodman joined a Spurs team which was built around perennial All-star center David Robinson, with a supporting cast of forwards Dale, Anderson and Negro. The 1995-1996 season, Rodman traded to the Chicago Bulls of perennial scoring champion Michael Jordan for center Will Perdue and cash considerations to fill a large void at power forward left by Horace Grant, who left the Bulls before the 1994-1995 season.

In 1996 NBA Playoffs, Rodman scored 7.5 points and grabbed 13.7 rebounds in each game and made a great part in the sixth game victory against the Seattle SuperSonics in the 1996 NBA final.

He went to prove himself in later games and earned his name on a large scale. In 1997, he paid special attention to his professional wrestling and emerged in the edition of Monday Nitro with his friend Hollywood Hulk Hogan in World Championship Wrestling.

He returned to WCB in 1999 and feuded with Randy Savage. Which culminated in a match at Road Wild which Rodman lost. But he did not lose the courage to avail of further success. In July 2000, he competed on the Generation Superstars of Wrestling.

Rodman said goodbye to wrestling to emerge as a contestant on Hulk Hogan’s Celebrity Championship wrestling, broadcast on CMT. He became the winner of the series. He also played in “The Rodman World Tour.”

In 2005, Rodman was the first man to pose naked for PETA’s ad campaign “rather go naked than wear fur.” The same year, he toured to Finland. He became Commissioner of the Lingerie Football League in 2005.

Later on, he appeared in various TV shows including “celebrity big brother,” “Love Island” and “celebrity mole.”


In 2008, he gave joining as a spokesman for a sports website OPENSports.com. The following year, he emerged as a contestant on Celebrity Apprentice.

In the year 2013, he appeared again in the Celebrity Apprentice, where he raised $20,000 for the Wish Foundation. In the same year, he joined Premier Brands to launch and promote Bad Boy Vodka.

He made his visit to North Korea which depicted in the 2015 documentary film “Dennis Rodman’s big bang in Pyongyang.”

In 2017, Rodman cast on the self-titled debut album alternative R&B Mansionz. He provides vocals on the single “Dennis Rodman” and uncredited vocals on “ I am thinking about horses.”

With his first wife, Annie Bakes, he has a daughter Alexis, born in 1988. They divorced in 1990. Then he married model Electra in 1998, but they divorced in 1999.

In 1999, Rodman met Moyer, with whom he had a son D.J and a daughter Trinity. Both married in 2003. Their marriage dissolved in 2012.
